TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to accept funds in the amount of $8,300 from Sk8 Dojo, a group under fiscal sponsorship with Habitat for Humanity, to place additional cement pathways at Michael K. Green Skate Park in 14th Street Park; and
Increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department by $8,300, offset by donation revenue from Sk8 Dojo. (District 1)
DISCUSSION
On November 19, 2020, the Parks and Recreation Commission (Commission) approved the Field and Court Improvements Toolkit (Toolkit), a comprehensive overview of steps, roles and responsibilities, and an inventory of available sites for ongoing needed improvements. The Parks, Recreation and Marine Department (Department) partners with the community for periodic and seasonal improvements that include cleanups. The Toolkit has successfully been used by several groups to propose park improvements.
The Department received a proposal from SK8 Dojo to enhance the experience of skate park users at the Michael K. Green Skate Park in 14th Street Park. SK8 Dojo supports skate park preservation and provides volunteer opportunities for at-risk youth in Long Beach. Participants are given the opportunity to build their resume, develop leadership skills, and maintain social health and overall wellness. In turn, the neighborhood and surrounding environment benefit from the volunteerism.
Sk8 Dojo received a $9,750 grant from General Motors to conduct quarterly clean-ups, of which a total of $8,300 is proposed to be donated to the City to be used by the Department to place additional cement paths at the Michael K. Green Skate Park. Sk8 Dojo collaborated with Habitat for Humanity and residents who live in the Washington Neighborhood area and users of the Michael K.
