TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to prepare an amendment to Section 10.14.020 of the Long Beach Municipal Code, modifying Section "A", Subsection 15 to read:
 
"15. (Westbound) West Fifty-First Street, between a point three hundred feet (300') west of Long Beach Boulevard and Pacific Avenue."  (District 8)
 
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Unified School District is in the process of constructing a new school on the old Dooley's Hardware site on the west side of Long Beach Boulevard north of Del Amo Boulevard. This new school, which is scheduled to open in January 2007, will necessitate modifications to the existing traffic circulation pattern in the area. Currently, 51st Street is a one-way westbound roadway between Long Beach Boulevard and Pacific Avenue.
 
An investigation conducted by the City Traffic Engineer concluded that conversion of 51st Street to a two-way traffic operation between Long Beach Boulevard and the newly converted north-south public alley located 300 feet west of Long Beach Boulevard to the west of the school campus, would enhance school traffic circulation in the area.
Furthermore, the proposed two-way conversion for this segment of 51st Street would be consistent with previous traffic studies and engineering reviews conducted by the Long Beach Unified School District for the new school project.
 
The Police Department, Fire Department, and the Environmental Services Bureau of Public Works have reviewed this proposal and have no objections.
 
The attached map highlights the location of the proposed two-way operation.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this item is not time critical.
 
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost of labor and materials for the installation of traffic controls in order to implement the proposed two-way operation is estimated at $750. Sufficient funds are budgeted in the General Fund (GP) in the Department of Public Works (PW) to support this activity.
 
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
