DISCUSSION
In 2006, the Public Works Department and the Redevelopment Agency jointly conducted a traffic and parking study of the neighborhood west of Atlantic Avenue, north of Market Street, east of Long Beach Boulevard, and south of South Street. The study effort included a number of workshops with businesses and residents of the area. The goal of the study was to develop neighborhood traffic and parking, improve access and circulation, calm traffic, add parking, and enhance safety. Over the past few years in the same area, we have installed new stop controls, converted streets to one-ways, and built traffic signals. The most important traffic control change completed as part of this study was the conversion of 56th Street and Ellis Street to one-way traffic operation between Linden Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard.

The development of the one-way street couplet on 56th Streets and Ellis Streets, and the streetscape improvements along Atlantic Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard, have facilitated the removal of blight, as well as helped create a safer, more cohesive, and economically dynamic neighborhood. Based on this success, the City Traffic Engineer is proposing to extend the one-way street grid by adding 55th Street and Louise Streets, between Linden Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. These enhancements will improve and calm traffic flow, improve neighborhood access and circulation, and provide additional parking spaces.
