TITLE
Recommendation to authorize the acceptance and expenditure of the Next Generation Click It or Ticket Grant from the University of California, Berkeley Traffic Safety Center with funding from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety; and increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) and in the Police Department (PD) by $39,047. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach (City) Police Department recently received the Next Generation Click It or Ticket Program funding for $39,047 from the University of California, Berkeley Traffic Safety Center (TSC) with funding from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The goal of the program is to increase seat belt usage statewide to 95 percent in 2009. Through the combined efforts of state and local law enforcement, seat belt enforcement campaigns will be conducted in November 2008 and May 2009. Funds will be used for overtime during the enforcements.
This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary Anderson on October 14, 2008 and Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on October 21,2008.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on November 11, 2008, to expedite use of the grant funds.
FISCAL IMPACT
The Next Generation Click It or Ticket Program is currently unbudgeted; therefore, an appropriation increase is included in the recommendation. The expense appropriation will be fully offset by grant revenues and the grant does not require matching funds.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
