TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000, offset by the Fifth Council District One-Time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to African American Cultural Center of Long Beach in support of their “Evening of Jazz”; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the African American Cultural Center of Long Beach’s mission to preserve, honor and celebrate the heritage and advance the culture of the Black/African American community in Long Beach and beyond. The African American Cultural Center of Long Beach hosted “An Evening of Jazz” on June 30, 2023. This event featured the music of the Legendary Alvin Hayes, Jr and his band, Z Scott on Violin and Alex and Charles Julian Fearing. The African American Cultural Center of Long Beach also recognized John Malveaux with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

This matter has been reviewed by Budget Analyst Joe R. Guerrero on June 26, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions of $1,000 to the African American Cultural Center of Long Beach to support their “Evening of Jazz” event as written above. The total appropriation increase of $1,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Fifth Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

MEGAN KERR COUNCILWOMAN,

FIFTH DISTRICT
