DISCUSSION

The Long Beach Section National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated (NCNW) is hosting their 37th Annual Spring Celebration and Awards Program “Service Above Self” on June 10, 2023, at the Grand, Long Beach Event Center. The Long Beach NCNW Section has been serving the needs of the Long Beach community for over 50 years and is one of the oldest non-profit African American service organizations in Long Beach. Proceeds from the event will be used to make a significant impact for youth and senior programs.

The 2023 Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration will be held on June 17, 2023, at the Rainbow Lagoon Park (400 E. Shoreline Drive). The celebration will uplift local vendors and celebrate Black culture with an array of merchandise and non-profit vendors, activities for children of all ages, and a rotation of entertainment that tells the story of Black culture. The Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration’s mission is to achieve the following goals: to provide a feeling of joy and dignity for Black people and people who love Black culture, and to educate people about the Juneteenth holiday through celebration, giving us all a greater awareness of how important it is to celebrate the collective American experience.

Love Beyond Limits (LBL) has served youth and families in the Long Beach area for over 10 years. On June 18, 2023, LBL is hosting their annual Juneteenth Celebration at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The Juneteenth Celebration is a community-based event with an array of guest speakers, live entertainment, food booths, music, poetry, and vendors. The goal of the event is to bring community together to celebrate the historical monumental holiday.

New Hope Academy of Change (NHAC) is hosting their Golf Tournament and Community Awards Luncheon on June 22, 2023, at the Skylinks in Long Beach. The mission of NHAC is to provide a comprehensive, all-inclusive program that supports college and career readiness, academic enrichment, and dropout prevention/intervention programs that utilize best practices of case management and educational intervention, student and parent engagement, sports, health/wellness efforts, and community safety initiatives to improve student outcomes. Contributions from this event will allow NHAC to continue to provide services and programs to at-risk youth in Long Beach.

On June 30, 2023, the African American Cultural Center of Long Beach (AACCLB) will host “An Evening of Jazz” and its history in Long Beach at the African American Cultural Center (4321 Atlantic Ave). The mission of the AACCLB is to preserve, honor and celebrate the heritage and advance the culture of the Black/African American community in Long Beach and beyond. The event will feature the music of the Legendary Alvin Hayes, Jr and his band, Z Scott on Violin and Alex and Charles Julian Fearing. The AACCLB will recognize John Malveaux with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He has spent his life introducing great talent in all music genres and put a national spotlight on musicians within and brought famous talent to Long Beach. It will be an event soaked in local African American music and congeniality.

The City Manager's Office of Special Events and Filming is organizing the Uptown Jazz Festival on behalf of the Ninth Council District on August 19, 2023, at Houghton Park. The Uptown Jazz Festival is currently in its 12th year and remains a well-attended event that thousands of Long Beach families and community members attend.
