DISCUSSION

Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Rainbow Lagoon Park. This annual event recognizes June 19th, 1865, an important date in American history, and is a time to celebrate African American achievements and contributions. The significance of Juneteenth today extends beyond the African American community. It serves as an educational and cultural touchstone for all Americans to learn about the past and its implications on the present. It brings together people of all races, nationalities, and religions to acknowledge a period in our history that has shaped and continues to influence our society. By contributing to the success of this free community event, we can collectively foster a more informed, diverse, and unified community, which aligns with our city’s mission to promote cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusion within our community.

Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the 12th annual Uptown Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Houghton Park. The City Manager's Office of Special Events and Filming will be organizing the Uptown Jazz Festival on behalf of the Ninth Council District. The Uptown Jazz Festival is currently in its 12th year and remains a well-attended event that thousands of Long Beach families and community members attend. This event offers a significant opportunity to conduct outreach to the Uptown community around the issues of health and economic recovery. By contributing, Long Beach residents are available to come to the park and enjoy community, music, community resources, vendors, a kids' area, and more.

Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the mission of the Long Beach Century Club by contributing to the Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Skylinks Golf Course, located in the Fifth District. The Long Beach Century Club is a non-profit organization that supports Long Beach youth who are involved in sports. Since 1957, the mission of the Long Beach Century Club has been to support these athletes and teams when they require financial assistance to enhance program growth and the opportunity to compete. This support allows individuals and teams to compete around the globe, often resulting in national and world championships. By contributing to support this event, it will help augment their program support in areas such as local amateur sports, educational institutions, and the Special Olympics.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

[Timing Considerations]

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions to Partners of Parks in support of the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration, to the City Manager's Office of Special Events and Filming to support the Uptown Jazz Festival, and the Long Beach Century Club in support of the Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament. The total appropriation increase of $2,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Fifth Council District One-Time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
