TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to work with the Public Works Department to prepare an update on the City’s Safe Streets Action Plan and progress towards our Vision Zero and return to the City Council within 45 days.

DISCUSSION
In 2022, 45 pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists died in crashes on the streets of Long Beach, 60% of these fatalities were pedestrians. This number has been rising in recent years due to many factors, including distracted driving, driving under the influence, and dangerous and reckless driving. Additional factors impacting safety include roads designed decades ago that prioritized only car traffic and at higher speeds than we know to be safe.

City staff have been doing admirable work on increasing multimodal mobility and increasing pedestrian and cyclist safety, including reducing speed limits on over 100 street segments throughout the City. This item asks for an update on their progress as well as next steps and what more needs to be done to prevent this loss of life from continuing.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Analyst Joe R. Guerrero on February 13, 2023.
