DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to authorize the temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, walkways, The Promenade, and the Downtown Shoreline bike path in connection with the 2023 Grand Prix of Long Beach per the proposed schedule. Closures will begin on February 23, 2023 and extend through May 3, 2023. These closures are only enacted as needed for construction or race activity.

Between April 14 and April 16, 2023, the 48th Annual Grand Prix of Long Beach will be held on the streets of Long Beach. This event will attract over 180,000 people to Long Beach and receives national and international media coverage. The Promenade, and the Downtown Shoreline bike path will be closed so the race may be held on City of Long Beach (City) streets. The bike path, beginning at Seaside Way and Chestnut Place, and continuing to a point approximately 400 feet east of the beach parking, must be closed during the race to allow fire trucks and medical vehicles continual access to the back side of the bleachers situated on the north and south sides of Shoreline Drive. Fire, Long Beach Utilities, Water, Police, Public Works, Financial Management, Development Services, Health and Human Services, and Parks, Recreation and Marine Departments, as well as Long Beach Transit, have reviewed the proposed schedule.

Traffic management and signage plans will be forwarded by the Long Beach Grand Prix Association to newspapers serving the greater Long Beach area asking for their cooperation to publicize these plans as a public service during the weeks prior to the race.

This matter was reviewed by Principal Deputy City Attorney Richard F. Anthony on January 5...
