TITLE

DISCUSSION

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was awarded the Fiscal Year 2022 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program - Local Solicitation from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, in the amount of $204,386. The grant monies will be used to support the services of a DNA Criminalist by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department assigned to work on Long Beach DNA cases. The grant term is October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2025.

 

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Arturo D. Sanchez on October 7, 2022 and by Budget Management Officer Nader Kaamoush on October 13, 2022.

 

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

City Council action is requested on November 1, 2022, to expedite use of grant funds.

 

FISCAL IMPACT

The City will receive grant funding up to $204,386 for the period of October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2025 from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.  An appropriation increase is requested in the amount of $204,386 in the General Grants Fund Group in the Police Department, offset by grant revenue.  The grant does not require any fund or in-kind service match.  This recommendation has no staffing impact beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is consistent with existing City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
