DISCUSSION
Juneteenth
In 2021, President Biden established June 19th as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the first federal holiday created since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year, the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 18, at Rainbow Lagoon Park in downtown Long Beach. The program includes local and international talent telling the story of Black Americans through song and dance. Attendees will also enjoy a curated vendor village, dance lessons, food trucks, and children's activities.
Organizers of this event aim to bring thousands of visitors to our City this summer and establish Long Beach as the premier destination for people celebrating Juneteenth. It is important that we celebrate Juneteenth as a time to honor our diversity and support social justice and equity in Long Beach. While it is a celebration of Black culture in the United States, this event will also serve as an educational opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the holiday and those who celebrate it.
“Still Working 9 to 5”
“Still Working 9 to 5” is a full-length documentary on the original movie, “Working 9 to 5,” which notes that nothing much has changed in the last 40 years. The first half of the movie focuses on the history of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton’s “Working 9 to 5” with current interviews, and the second half of the movie is about the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the Wage Gap. It is incredible to see Long Beach’s own Zoe Nicholson featured alongside Lilly Ledbetter.
This film screening and community event will be so incredibly valuable for women and girls and is a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with real life history and ongoing advocacy to improve the conditions of women in our community and country.
The producers of the film have given Wild West Women, Inc. and Zoe Nicholson permission to show it here in Long Beach and will be present in person for the Q&A. Completing the free community event will be ERA-themed cookies baked by Willmore Bakery.
This free event will be held at the Art Theatre of Long Beach on Thursday, July 21, 2022, which is the 99th anniversary of the writing of the ERA. Tickets will be available starting June 1 on Eventbrite.

FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager Department to provide contributions of $1,000 to Wild West Women, Inc. to support a screening of “Still Working 9 to 5”, which will be held on July 21, 2022, and $1,000 to the Long Beach Partners of Parks in support of the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration, to be held on June 18, 2022. The total appropriation increase in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $2,000 is offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District one-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on meeting other City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with the recommendation.
