DISCUSSION

The Mayor’s Fund for Education

The mission of the Mayor’s Fund for Education is to offer community-wide programs and amplify efforts of local education stakeholders to provide a cradle-to-career approach ensuring all students have access to educational pathways and careers resulting in a vibrant local economy.

The Mayor’s Fund collaborates with community, civic, and education partners to help address the most pressing needs facing Long Beach area students and their families. They share our community-wide belief that investment in education offers one of the greatest opportunities for meaningful impact - one that can transform a community and change lives.

Especially as many educational opportunities and early childhood care and learning opportunities were curtailed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and have yet to fully recover, sponsorship of educational programs and pathways is crucial to the recovery of our community.

The Long Beach Museum of Art

The Long Beach Museum of Art is a vital arts institution in the City of Long Beach. Supporting the art education programs and art conservation efforts there through fiscal sponsorship advances the arts in our community. This sponsorship will further help the continuation of the LBMA’s world-class exhibitions and the growth of their exceptional educational programs as we strive toward their primary mission of serving as a cultural and educational resource to the community.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on April 21, 2022.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager Department to provide a contribution of $1,000 to Community Partners to support the Mayor’s Fund for Education to support their 5 Year Anniversary Celebration, which was held on April 28, 2022, and to provide a contribution to the Long Beach Museum of Art of $1,500 to support their Old Bags and Baubles event taking place on May 15, 2022. The total appropriation increases in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $2,500 is offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District one-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on meeting other City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with the recommendation.
