Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $500, to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
The African American Heritage Society of Long Beach (AAHS) collects resources and funds to promote and preserve African American history, support African American genealogical research, and expand public awareness of these contributions for all. Founded in 1997, this year marks the 25th anniversary of AAHS in Long Beach. Their continued commitment to highlighting Black accomplishments benefits all of Long Beach, shown by the African American Resource Area located at Burnett Neighborhood Library.
Continuing their tradition of Black History Month programming, AAHS will be hosting an upcoming virtual event, “Breaking Barriers: Sports Edition” on Saturday, February 19th at 4:00pm. The event will feature a special interview with former NFL Player and CSULB athlete Terrell Davis.
This contribution provides funding for a celebration of African American excellence in athletics, while also recognizing some of our community’s most accomplished individuals. Further, the event being held virtually will allow a broader audience to join in on the festivities. I am requesting the Council’s approval to support this noble endeavor.
