TITLE

Recommendation to request City Attorney to prepare a resolution to support a fair and free union election for Security Guards at CommonSpirit/ Dignity Health facilities.

DISCUSSION

CommonSpirit/Dignity Health Security Officers are the frontline proctors of the patients and workers at the CommonSpirit/ Dignity Health care facilities. They have reported that they have been most vulnerable during the pandemic due to their high risk of Covid-19 exposure, their lack of personal protective equipment, inadequate staffing levels, and insufficient safety protocols. Numerous Security Officers have reportedly contracted COVID-19 and have in turn infected their family members due to the reasons previously mentioned. Many Security Officers have come forward to voice their desire to have greater power over their wages, benefits and terms and conditions of employment. These Security Officers believe that a fair and free election to vote for a union representation will be the pathway to having stronger protections against COVID-19, safer staffing levels, sufficient PPE, rigorous safety protocols, affordable healthcare coverage, wages that reward experience and seniority, and more respectful and equitable treatment throughout their workplace.
