TITLE

Recommendation to receive and file a presentation in recognition of Persian New Year - Nowruz.

DISCUSSION

Since 2015, the City Council has held a celebration at City Hall to recognize Persian New Year, known in Farsi as Nowruz. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, and the cancellation of a number of City Council meetings in 2020, that celebration was unable to occur.

Long Beach prides itself on its diversity and enthusiastic support of a variety of cultures, ethnicities, faiths, and experiences, so it is important for recognitions like this to not go missed. Additionally, the message of Nowruz focuses on rebirth and opportunity as we enter the New Year. It is oriented around topics that continue to resonate for us during the difficult times we face around the world and individually like the affirmation of life in harmony with nature, and an awareness of the necessity of a respectful attitude towards all life.

Therefore, the Long Beach City Council should receive and file a presentation in recognition of Nowruz continuing our prioritization of supporting the fantastic diversity which has become the hallmark of our beautiful City.

This matter has been reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on March 11, 2021.
