TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to prepare a resolution in support of keeping the United States Postal Service Processing and Distribution Center facility located at 2300 Redondo Avenue fully operational.

DISCUSSION
Last October Postmaster General John E. Potter stated that mail volume could decline by as much as 9 billion items in the current fiscal year. In January Postmaster General Potter announced that the United States Postal Service (USPS) lost more than $2.8 billion and expects to lose more than $6 billion in the coming year. Nationally, mail volume declined by 9 billion from the pervious year, the largest single decline in US history.

With the USPS considering suspension of mail delivery on the lightest days of the week, USPS recently announced that it is undertaking a study to determine whether to move some of the operations at the USPS facility located at 2300 Redondo Avenue to Santa Ana or Los Angeles.

The Redondo Avenue facility serves Long Beach as a post office, regional mail distribution center, and bulk mail handling site. The facility also employs over 800 individuals jobs and is critical to the local economy.
