TITLE

DISCUSSION
Pacific Gateway operates the Youth Opportunity Center to facilitate assistance with education completion, access to career and technical education and training, participation in internships, and other work-based experiences. To maximize outreach in the communities covered by Pacific Gateway and to deliver many of the above services prescribed by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Pacific Gateway collaborates with various community stakeholders, including public, private, and non-profit organizations.

In May of this year, the City, through Pacific Gateway, partnered with Pacific Gateway Workforce Partnership (Partnership), the non-profit organization to administer the recruitment and hiring process for Starbucks’ new location on Willow Street and Long Beach Boulevard. In alignment with that successful event, the Partnership will continue to utilize Pacific Gateway’s staff expertise to provide customer service training and soft skills training to approximately 200 youth employed by Starbucks.



This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber and by Budget Management Officer Julissa José-Murray on June 29, 2017.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on July 18, 2017, to expedite the processing of the required documents to accept funding for the Program Year that began on July 1, 2017.
