DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to accept a $25,000 grant from the Tesoro Foundation to fund the Neighborhood Leadership Program, which provides tools for effective communication and teambuilding, and develops the skills of neighborhood leaders from all walks of life. The Tesoro Foundation has awarded grant funding to support the program for the past three years.

The Neighborhood Leadership Program is a nationally recognized, multi-lingual, multi-cultural program designed to improve neighborhoods by training residents to make a difference. The program is free to participants and has been offered by the Department of Development Services Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau since 1992. Over 650 residents have completed this intensive curriculum, which develops leadership and neighborhood organizing skills. The Neighborhood Leadership Program Class of 2017, which began on March 9, 2017, will gain public speaking skills, learn about inclusive leadership, grant proposal writing and implement four community projects in North Long Beach. Participants learn the value of leveraging resources and developing partnerships to positively impact Long Beach neighborhoods. Participants will attend a two-day human relations weekend retreat to learn effective conflict management skills, build relationships, and shared team-building exercises. The program provides translation support to non-English speaking participants.

This matter was reviewed by Assistant City Attorney Michael J. Mais and by Budget Management Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on March 30, 2017.
