DISCUSSION
City Council approval is being requested authorizing the City Manager to execute a contract for the purchase of three (3) John Deere 7630 tractors for the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine.

The Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Beach Maintenance Division is currently utilizing three John Deere tractors on the City's beaches that are past their useful life and are now creating excessive inefficiencies. These tractors were originally scheduled FY 05 replacements that have been reviewed and approved by the Fleet Review Committee. Due to funding issues for the cost of new equipment, and the fact that they were still in usable condition, the replacement of these tractors was deferred until FY 08.

The purchase of these John Deere 7630 tractors will keep a consistent fleet standardization and eliminate any need for additional training for mechanics and operators.

The City Charter provides an alternative procurement method by permitting the City to purchase or otherwise obtain services, supplies, materials, equipment and labor with other governmental agencies by purchasing under their contracts on a voluntary and selective basis when authorized by a Resolution of the City Council.

The Department of Public Works, Fleet Services Bureau, investigated procurement options and learned that the State of California had completed a competitive bid process for John Deere Tractors and has a contract with Deere & Company dba John Deere Company that meets the City's needs.
