TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on travel to New York, NY and Washington, D.C. to attend an International Downtown Association event, the Broad Prize for Urban Education Awards and an Alliance to Save Energy event.

DISCUSSION
On September 15 through September 17, I attended an International Downtown Association Event in New York, NY. At this event I met with downtown development professionals and leaders and discussed important issues affecting downtowns. The International Downtown Association was founded in 1954 and has more than 650 member organizations worldwide. The mission of the International Downtown Association is to promote vital and livable urban centers.

On September 18, I attended the Broad Prize for Urban Education Awards in Washington, D.C. Broad Prize for Urban Education, established in 2002, is the largest education award in the country given to school districts. The Broad Prize is awarded each year to honor urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall perforn1ance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among poor and minority students. As a finalist, the Long Beach Unified School District was awarded a $125,000 in college scholarships.

On September 19 through 21, I met with our City's representatives in Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of the City.

On September 20 through 21, I attended an Alliance to Save Energy Event in Washington, D.C. At the event, I participated in a panel discussion on the "Greening of America" that focused on energy conservation, alternative energy and other ways to increase energy efficiency. The Alliance to Save Energy is an organization dedicated to promoting energy efficiency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment and greater energy security.
