DISCUSSION
On March 1, 2005, the City Council awarded a one-year contract to furnish and deliver tree-trimming services to TruGreen Landcare, a California General Partnership, in the amount of $800,000, with the option of renewing for two additional one-year terms (see Attachment). Through this contract, timely maintenance is performed, thereby preserving and protecting the urban forest by reducing the number of trees damaged or destroyed by overgrowth and inclement weather. Complementing the Public Works tree trimming operation with contracted services has proven to be an effective means of providing this service to the public.

Based on the contractor's acceptable performance in completing all assigned tree trimming work, the contract was amended on March 21, 2006, to extend the contract for another year and increase the contract amount by $1,000,000, which provided additional contract authority of $200,000 for Park tree maintenance, bringing the total contract amount for the first two years to $1,800,000. Staff is now recommending that the contract be extended for a third and final year, increasing the contract amount by $1,000,000, bringing the total contract amount for the three years to $2,800,000.

The contractor has agreed to continue street tree trimming work at a marginal 6 percent increase above the current unit prices. At the request of the City, the Contractor has provided a new unit price for an emergency three-man trimming crew, which will provide as-needed backup support when the city encounters heavy tree damage from storm events.
