DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Gas and Oil Department (LBGO) monitors surface elevations for oil field-related subsidence control through the Semi-Annual Mobile Global Positioning System (GPS) Survey of approximately 240 bench marks and the continuous real-time Long Beach GPS Deformation Network (LBDN). The LBDN utilizes 13 permanent, City-owned GPS Base Stations located from Fort McArthur on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to the Belmont Shore Peninsula. Our network is integrated into the Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN) that is administered by the U.S. Geologic Survey, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, NASA, and the University of Southern California.

The City Council previously authorized two contracts with Condor Earth Technologies (Condor) to design, install, maintain and provide professional support in the operation of the LBDN. Condor customized the LBDN to LBGO specifications, which at that time was the first network of its type in the world. Two amendments to Contract No. 28025 were authorized in 2004 and included an option for a two-year extension to July 31, 2009. Condor proved to be technically proficient in its service to the City. In June of this year, Condor sold its GPS Division to Pinnacle Technologies, another corporation experienced in GPS and other surface elevation monitoring methods over oil fields.
