TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file the report from the March 15, 2006, California After School Summit in Sacramento.

DISCUSSION
On Wednesday, March 15th, I participated in the California After School Summit in Sacramento. I attended as a member of a delegation that included Youth Services Superintendent Cynthia Fogg and Long Beach Unified School District Board Member Jon Meyer.

The purpose of the conference was to provide educators, city officials, and legislators with information on Proposition 49 and the development and operation of after-school programs. It is anticipated that there will be state funding available to improve and expand the City's existing after-school programs. Afterschool activities engage youth during the hours of the day when they are most vulnerable. We are in the initial stages of forming a coalition between the City of Long Beach and other stakeholders to strategize and seek funding for future enhancements to these vital programs.

I was honored to be part of the City's delegation and look forward to working with Youth Services, LBUSD, and other community-based organizations on future efforts.
