TITLE
Recommendation to request the City Manager to report to the City Council within 30 days the possibility of installing a solar parking lot pilot program for a photovoltaic lighting system in the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier parking lot.

DISCUSSION
Long Beach produced its first Solar-Powered Fire Station on August 27, 2005 and the City Council approved a recommendation on September 6,2005 to continue further environmental improvements to make the City of Long Beach an environmentally sustainable city.

As the City of Long Beach becomes a healthier and more sustainable city through a stronger commitment to clean sources of energy, it is time to explore a pilot program to include Solar-Powered streetlights in our parking lots. Solar electric systems-also known as photovoltaic (PV) systems-have no negative impact on the environment, making them one of the cleanest powergenerating technologies available today. PV systems produce no air pollution, hazardous waste, or noise, and they require no transportable fuels according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Because of these benefits, PV can play an important role in mitigating environmental problems like air pollution, global warming, and electricity costs for the City of Long Beach.

Photovoltaic lighting systems are currently used in Anaheim, Berkeley, Las Vegas, New York City, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Tucson, and Washington, D.C.
