TITLE
Recommendation to approve donation of four surplus lawnmowers - Unit Numbers 14174, 14181, 14182 and 14183 to the Long Beach Unified School District.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On September 21,2005, the Long Beach Unified School District (District) sent a request to the City Manager's Office requesting the donation of surplus lawn mowers for field maintenance at their Polytechnic High School campus. The additional equipment would reduce District staff time and costs to perform required field maintenance. The Polytechnic fields are utilized for District events, as well as Long Beach Youth Football, Long Beach Junior Athletic Football, the American Legion Baseball League and other community events.

Due to contracting out of the City's Median Maintenance program in October 2004, the City currently has four surplus lawn mowers (Unit Nos. 14174, 14181, 14182 and 14183) awaiting disposal.

This matter was reviewed by City Attorney Robert Shannon on November 3, 2005 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on October 31,2005.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on November 15, 2005 to ensure that the District receives the equipment for their immediate needs at the Polytechnic High School campus.

FISCAL IMPACT
These units have a salvage value of approximately $5,000. If these units were sold at auction, the salvage revenue would accrue to the Fleet Services Fund (IS 386) and the Department of Public Works (PW).

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
