TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file presentation on Influenza and Pandemic Response.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
Recent media attention to a potential influenza pandemic has presented concerns at all levels of government. Although avian (bird) influenza has been identified in Asia and Europe, it is not yet present in the United States. Birds are historically the host of influenza viruses and although it has not yet occurred, the current strain of avian influenza has pandemic potential, since it might ultimately adapt into a strain that is contagious to humans. The Department of Health and Human Services has been closely monitoring the potential for a global outbreak of disease, and is prepared for a presentation regarding this topic.
