DISCUSSION
On October 21,2003, the City Council approved the award of a two-year grant from the California Department of Health Services (State) for a California Nutrition Network Healthy Active Families (CNN) program to be implemented in the City of Long Beach by the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The State has again awarded grant funds to the City of Long Beach through the DHHS to continue this Nutrition Network Program for a period of three years for a maximum amount of $2,814,948. The term of this agreement is October 1, 2005 through September 30, 2008. During the past two years, the CNN Program conducted 24 nutrition education classes and provided information to more than 50,000 individuals in the Long Beach area.

The goal of the CNN Program is to create innovative partnerships that enable low-income, food-stamp eligible Californians to: increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, increase physical activity each day, and increase participation in federal nutrition assistance programs by those who are eligible.

The DHHS CNN Program incorporates these goals into its workplace activities and its target population, which is persons participating in, or eligible for, USDA's Food Stamp Program. The activities in the DHHS CNN program include free nutrition education classes for families, outreach and education conducted at the local Farmers' Markets and throughout the community and presentations to providers who serve low-income individuals.
