TITLE
Recommendation to acknowledge the recognition of the first African American Police officers to serve the Long Beach Police Department and posthumous recognition of the LBPD's first African American officer, Detective Warren "Duke" Dubois Jordan.
DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach lost a significant member our community when Warren "Duke" Dubois Jordan died on Tuesday October 25, 2005. Retired Detective Warren "Duke" Dubois Jordan was the first African American Police Officer to serve the Long Beach Police Department. With the passing of
Detective "Duke" Jordan, the City Council should acknowledge the distinguished history of African Americans officers in our Public Safety community and their contributions to the City.
Detective Jordan was trailblazer in the law enforcement community and a role model for those who followed in his footsteps. Three other officers soon followed Detective Jordan into service and were hired in 1950.
Warren "Duke" Jordan - Hired April 18, 1948
Eugene Ivory - Hired in 1950
Trusten Lofland - Hired 1950
Bennie Roan - Hired 1950
Detective Jordan was a 7th District resident'along with Officers Lofland and Roan, who still reside on West Side. Officer Ivory lives in the Los Angeles Area.
