TITLE

$25,433 for the period of one year. (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach has been awarded a one-year grant from the County of Los Angeles in the amount of $25,433 to continue its CalWORKS program in the City of Long Beach.The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been providing CalWORKS alcohol and drug treatment recovery services since 1998 under an agreement with the
County of Los Angeles (County). Eligible participants in the DHHS program are referred for services by a County-designated assessment center. Clients in the CalWORKS program are referred from the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services through the Community Assessment Service Center to attend individual and group counseling as well as education lectures. The services also include drug screening and alcohol testing. Furthermore, as part of the program, staff provide outreach activities at the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) office and the Department of Corrections two times a month to promote the services of the program.
This program provides education, direct counseling, group therapy, and prevention services to substance abusers and their families in the greater Long Beach area. This agreement will allow continuation of these services for another year. This matter was reviewed by Senior Deputy City Attorney Donna F. Gwin on August 11, 2005 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on August 12,2005.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on August 23, 2005, as the DHHS began providing services under this agreement on July 1,2005.

FISCAL IMPACT
The City will receive grant revenues of $25,433 from July 1,2005 through June 30, 2006. These grant funds...
