TITLE
Recommendation to authorize Public Walkways Occupancy Permit for sidewalk dining at Samurai Sam's Restaurant located at 245 Pine Avenue, Suite 190.  (District 2)

DISCUSSION

John Baek, the owner of Samurai Sam's Restaurant, requested a first time permit to temporarily occupy part of the adjoining sidewalk at 245 Pine Avenue, Suite 190, with portable fixtures for the purpose of sidewalk dining. The proposed permit area and a list of furnishings and accessories to be placed in the permit area are shown on the attached Exhibit A. Approval of this permit is based on the conditions and standards of Chapter 14.14 of the Long Beach Municipal Code, which describes temporary uses of public rights-of-way. The width of the sidewalk at this location is 16 feet and a minimum clearance of 5 feet will be maintained between the permit area and a street tree adjacent to the restaurant. At the south end of the restaurant, a 6-foot clearance will be maintained between an existing streetlight and the permit area.

The subject permit was prepared by Deputy City Attorney Lisa Peskay Malmsten on February 17, 2005.
