DISCUSSION
On May 23, 2012, the City of Long Beach was awarded a Violence Prevention Plan grant in the amount of $403,918 from The California Endowment (Endowment). The Endowment seeks to improve community health and safety through systematic change, and determined that the preparation of a Violence Prevention Plan (VPP) would provide broad policy support throughout Long Beach. The grant is a two-year grant beginning on July 1, 2012, and ending on June 30, 2014. There is no in-kind match requirement for this grant.

On July 5, 2011, the City Council voted to request the preparation of a comprehensive Citywide VPP. The acceptance of this grant award provides the funding to prepare the VPP. With direct oversight by the City Manager’s Office, City departments will be engaged in a coordinated effort to address areas of Citywide violence prevention. In addition, stakeholders throughout the City will be included in the planning process. The VPP will focus on all forms of violence prevention including domestic, child abuse, elder abuse, hate crimes, bullying, gang violence and violent crime.

Upon completion of the VPP, the City of Long Beach will be eligible to apply for State and Federal funding to implement the plan.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard Anthony and Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on May 23, 2012.
