TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to execute an agreement and any subsequent amendments with the Long Beach Public Transportation Company for the City of Long Beach to provide law enforcement services for a period of two years for an estimated annual reimbursement of $802,000.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Public Transportation Company (Long Beach Transit) has contracted with the City of Long Beach for police service since December 1993, with the latest agreement expiring this past September 30, 2005. Long Beach Transit has requested continuation of the police services and has agreed to abide by the terms of the expired contract until a new contract is approved. The new contract will provide a dedicated unit of six sworn officers and one-half sergeant on straight time to patrol the Long Beach Transit System during the hours of system operation. The officer's deployment will ensure that the coverage of system operation will be provided by two officers per shift. This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard Anthony on July 27, 2006 and
Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on July 28,2006.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on August 8, 2006, to expedite the two-year agreement.
