TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,300 offset by the Sixth Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department, to provide contributions of:
· $925 to Long Beach Forward to support their Conscious Cinema: Film and Dialogue event on September 16, 2023;
· $375 to Hands of New Hope to support the Backpack Giveaway held on August 19, 2023;
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,300 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department; and
Restate the recommendation approved by City Council on December 6, 2022, to correct the name of the recipient receiving the $500 donation of Sixth Council District One-time District Priority Funds from Long Beach Residents Empowered to Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, and $500 from AOC7 to Partners of Parks.
DISCUSSION
Long Beach Forward is a community-based organization dedicated to working with Long Beach residents and partners to tackle institutional issues stemming from racial and income inequity. Their mission is to create a healthy Long Beach with low-income communities of color by building community knowledge, leadership, and power. On September 16, 2023, Long Beach Forward is hosting a free movie screening and community discussion event called Conscious Cinema: Film and Dialogue. Event participants will connect to one another as a community, explore a greater understanding around the issues as they continue to exist today, and be introduced to ways they can take part in local social change opportunities.
Hands of New Hope is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides resources and develops programs to serve the needs of families, seniors, and youths in the underserved communities of the City of Long Beach.
