DISCUSSION
City Council approval is being requested to enter into a contract for the purchase of two Chevrolet Suburbans for the Long Beach Fire Department, as Battalion Chief vehicles.

The Long Beach Fire Department has been utilizing the Chevrolet Suburban as Battalion Chief vehicles and currently has one unit scheduled for replacement as part of the City's multi-year replacement plan, and one unit retired from service due to an accident in late-2006. There are currently no back-up units available in the Fire Department's Fleet.

The new Suburbans will result in the replacement of one existing Suburban that is nine years old in addition to the salvaged unit taken out of service. The budgeted replacement cycle of a Suburban is nine years. The scheduled vehicle to be replaced is at such an advanced age that managing maintenance costs and repair downtime is creating excessive inefficiencies.

The City Charter provides an alternative procurement method by permitting the City to purchase or otherwise obtain services, supplies, materials, equipment and labor with other governmental agencies by purchasing under their contracts on a voluntary and selective basis when authorized by a Resolution of the City Council.
