TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution in support of AB 1101 Diesel Magnet Sources (Oropeza).

DISCUSSION
The City's State Legislative Agenda includes supporting "legislation that improves the quality of air in the City of Long Beach by reducing particulate matter."

Over 90 percent of the cancer risk from air pollution is caused by pollutants emitted from mobile sources, such as trucks, ships, airplanes, locomotive engines and other diesel-powered equipment.  That is especially true for the air quality in Long Beach.

Assembly Bill 1101 by Assemblymember Jenny Oropeza would designate ports, airports and railyards as "diesel magnet sources" and require the facilities to prepare emission inventories and risk assessments, notify affected communities, and develop and implement risk reduction measures to address significant public health risks.

The legislation passed the Assembly on January 31 and will now be considered in the State Senate.  We believe that it is important for the City to support efforts to legislative efforts to address the air pollution that is impacting our community.

SUGGESTED ACTION
