DISCUSSION
The Workforce Development Bureau (WDB) administers the federal Workforce
Investment Act (WIA) funds received annually by the City. Those funds pay for career
development and business services delivered by the Career Transition Center, the
Youth 0pportunity Center, and selected community based organizations throughout
the City.

Local cornmunity-based organizations are contracted with to assist in providing on-site
case management, job development, counseling, vocational assessment, and other
related services. Because of uncertainty regarding reauthorization of WIA and fund
appropriations, authorization for short-term extensions is requested to ensure the
continued delivery of services. The proposed increases for the six-month extensions
are reflected below.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on July 19,2005, to facilitate processing of the required documents.

FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funds to cover the recommended contracts are budgeted in the Community
Development Grants Fund (SR 150) in the Department of Community Development
(CD). The requested amendments are funded with WIA grant funds. There is no
impact on the General Fund (GF).

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
