TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement and all necessary documents and any subsequent amendments including extending the term, with Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), of Long Beach, CA, to establish and provide learning opportunities for select high school students for career internship experiences, at no cost to LBUSD or students, for the period of June 18, 2021 through June 17, 2026. (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On June 19, 2018, the City Council authorized an agreement with LBUSD establishing a partnership to provide internship opportunities for LBUSD high school students at various City departments. Since that time, approximately six students have participated in work experience internships through the program. City Council approval is requested to enter into an agreement to continue this partnership with LBUSD, to provide learning opportunities for select high school students at no cost to the district or students. LBUSD facilitates the administration of the program, including placement and tracking of the students. These internships will allow students to have access to work-based learning opportunities in growing and emerging career sectors within the City, so that they gain skills and knowledge needed to be successful members of our local economy.

These internships will not displace any regular paid employee of the City and students will not be employed or compensated by the City to perform tasks that are included as part of the internship.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber on May 12, 2021 and by Budget Management Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on May 19, 2021.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on June 8, 2021, to ensure that the agreement is in place expeditiously.
