DISCUSSION
With the summer season fast approaching, nearly 81,000 Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) students throughout the city will be out of school and less occupied than during the school year. Thousands of young people will face more idle time that can sometimes lead to trouble.

Core strategies to keep youth positively engaged and active during the summer include offering quality programming and events for them to participate in,and by providing opportunities for employment and worthwhile learning experiences. An organized city summer effort is essential to fostering a safe environment community wide. While there are various opportunities for young people to remain active throughout the summer in the City of Long Beach, a comprehensive report and community briefings will allow residents to better understand and utilize these coordinated efforts.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no significant fiscal impact for the requested report. Limited funding may be necessary to host the community briefings.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
