TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file "State of AIDS in Long Beach" Report. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
On December 2, 2003, the City Council requested that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provide an annual update on the "State of AIDS in Long Beach." Since then, the DHHS has provided an annual presentation to the City Council on the extent of HIV/AIDS disease in Long Beach, community programs and collaborations aimed at stemming the epidemic, and challenges and opportunities to advance HIV/AIDS prevention and care in our city. The DHHS, in collaboration with the Long Beach Comprehensive HIV Planning Group, would like to provide a brief update on the status of HIV/AIDS in Long Beach and key issues and recommendations impacting our work in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment at the March 21 meeting.
While the City of Long Beach has made progress in addressing HIV/AIDS as a critical public health issue in our community, our city continues to have a higher cumulative incidence rate for AIDS compared to Los Angeles County and the State of California. This requires the City to continue its proactive approach in addressing the epidemic. This year's presentation will have special focus on key legislative issues such as name-based disease reporting and the Congressional Ryan Care Act Reauthorization.
This matter was reviewed by Senior Deputy City Attorney Donna F. Gwin on March 7, 2006 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on March 8, 2006.
