TITLE
Recommendation to request report regarding proposed federal, state and local cuts to senior programs; and request the Federal Legislative Committee to advocate funding for a Regional Senior Services Collaboration Coordinator.

DISCUSSION
The Long Beach 2010 Strategic Plan identified the goal to "Implement plans to meet the needs of the city's seniors, including health, safety, transportation, housing, and quality of life."

With the Governor's requested budget cuts, many of our senior population will see severe impacts to programs and services that assist them with an acceptable quality of life. I would request a report on which services, including at federal, State, County and City levels, would be effected by such budget cuts including local cuts to our general fund.

Also in reference to the goals of the 2010 Strategic Plan, participants in the Optimization Study for Older Adults are supporting the City's 2009 fiscal year appropriation requests to the federal government for a Regional Senior Services Collaboration Coordinator. While initial discussions with Congresswoman Richardson's office on the matter have been positive, I would request the matter be referred to the Federal Legislative Committee for advocacy.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga
