TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report, which identifies specific strategies to encourage Caltrans to work more effectively with the City of Long Beach in the operation and maintenance of its freeway on-and off-ramps. (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On May 3, 2005, the City Council requested a report, within 30 days, which identifies
specific strategies to encourage Caltrans to work more effectively with the City in the
operation and maintenance of its freeway on- and off-ramps. At that meeting, it was
agreed that Caltrans' new Regional Manager for this area would be invited to present a
maintenance schedule that was under development.

Caltrans South Region is embarking on a plan to publish its work schedule so that the
City may have an expectation of when Caltrans crews will be in Long Beach. Caltrans is
beginning with street sweeping and ramp maintenance schedules.

Attached are the maintenance schedules that were prepared by Christine Anderson,
Caltrans Regional Manager for the South Region of District 7. In Long Beach, those
routes include the 1-710, SR-22, SR-91 and the 1-405. The South Region extends from
downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach and includes portions of 17 State routes with 166
employees.

Ms. Anderson, unfortunately, is unable to attend the June 7 meeting because of work
conflicts. However, she would like to make a presentation to the City Council at another
meeting in June to discuss the schedules she has been developing for maintaining onand
off-ramps in Long Beach. The schedules she has developed to date are attached for
your information. Again, Ms. Anderson will attend a City Council meeting within the next
few weeks to respond to any questions or comments.
