TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to amend the Long Beach Municipal Code and any other City code section to include the term "gender identity" as part of all anti-discrimination provisions, present and future.

DISCUSSION

Pursuant to my request made during the March 4, 2008, Council Meeting to identify areas within the Long Beach Municipal Code where the inclusion of a prohibition against gender identity discrimination would be appropriate, the City Attorney's office researched and found a number of sections to be applicable.

I would like to request amendments to the Municipal Code and any other city code sections to include the term 'gender identity' as part of all anti-discrimination provisions. This shall include present and future city codes and ordinances.

Gender identity is a person's own sense of identification as male or female. It is important both for workplace fairness and for human rights protection to prevent discrimination against transgender people.
