TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement, and any subsequent amendments, with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, for the period of July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2033, for resident training in Family Medicine with the Health and Human Services Department. DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into an agreement with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for resident training in Family Medicine with the Health and Human Services Department.

This agreement will allow Long Beach Memorial Medical Center residents-in-training to intern or be placed with the Health Department to expand and gain first-hand knowledge of working in a public health setting. This program is mutually beneficial, allowing the residents to gain required field experience and learn about the role and function of the Health Department and the importance of public health in the community, and providing the clinics with knowledgeable volunteer interns that enhance the clinical and program capacity of the Health Department. These programs also serve as sites for the Health Department to recruit future public health professionals. Residents-in-training were instrumental in assisting the Health Department with contact tracing during the early months of the pandemic.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Anita Lakhani and Budget Analysis Officer Greg Sorensen on June 29, 2023.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on July 18, 2023, to enter into the agreement and commence program and clinical rotation activities.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal or local job impact associated with the recommended action. This recommendation has no staffing impact beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is consistent with existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
