DISCUSSION
On July 28, 2006 the Department of Health and Human Services received notification of a Mosquito Control Grant Award of $25,900 from the California Department of Health Services to enhance and expand mosquito control for the residents of the City of Long Beach. These funds are earmarked specifically to reduce the risk of West Nile Virus transmission to Long Beach residents. There are several areas in Long Beach requiring enhanced control, including the Los Angeles River, the Harbor and Simms Pond. The additional funds will be used to purchase two all terrain vehicles (ATV), and provide revenue for additional pesticides and staff overtime.

This matter was reviewed by Senior Deputy City Attorney Donna F. Gwin on August 8, 2006, and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on August 15,2006.
