DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to authorize the City Manager to execute contracts for the as-needed purchase and delivery of video surveillance cameras and related system components. These cameras are part of the Long Beach Common Operating Picture (LBCOP) system, which combines law enforcement data with real time video monitoring to support public safety. Over the past several years, the City of Long Beach has deployed video surveillance cameras to enhance public safety in our community. LBCOP and these cameras have proven to be a cost effective tool for preventing, deterring and investigating crimes.

In September 2010, the Technology and Innovation Department (TI) assumed responsibility for the technical support of the cameras and telecommunications infrastructure connecting the cameras to the City’s network. TI has continued to repair and maintain the existing cameras as well as install new cameras at various locations throughout the City. Nearly 450 cameras City-wide are currently connected to the LBCOP system. As funding is identified, TI, in collaboration with the Long Beach Police Department, plans to continue to maintain current systems and expand the use of video surveillance cameras across the City.
