TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file an update on community outreach efforts to determine the feasibility of placing a public safety ballot measure on the November 7, 2006 Statewide General Election ballot.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On January 10, 2006, City staff presented results of polling conducted in October and November 2005 to determine support for a possible tax measure. As a result of the information shared at this meeting (see attached letter), the City Council directed City staff to obtain additional community input to determine if there is support for placing a potential public safety tax measure on the November 7, 2006 ballot. Pursuant to that action, City staff have been attending meetings throughout the community to discuss City service demands and gather additional feedback on the community's funding priorities.

At these meetings, City staff have shared information on the challenges the City faces in addressing community needs, and have asked for verbal comments from the community. Attendees are also asked to complete an opinion survey on funding priorities. In an effort to keep the City Council and the community informed, an update on the feedback received to date will be presented at the City Council meeting.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
To place a measure on the November 7,2006 ballot, City Council action is needed by August 11, 2006, which requires approval on or before the August 8, 2006 City Council meeting.
