TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to execute the Third Amendment to Contract No. 28437 with the Long Beach Unified School District for Jail Food Services, to extend the term of the agreement to July 11, 2005, at an estimated cost not to exceed $20,000.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On September 2, 2003, the City Council authorized an agreement with Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) to provide food services to the inmates of the men's jail during the reconstruction of the Public Safety Building at 400 West Broadway (see Attachment 1).

On November 9, 2004, the City Council authorized a First Amendment to the Agreement that increased the contract amount by $186,000 and extended the term an additional six months, to March 31,2005, while a request for proposals was being prepared to solicit bids for prepackaged meals for the inmates (see Attachment 2).

On April 19, 2005, the City Council authorized a Second Amendment to the Agreement that increased the contract amount by $93,000 and extended the term an additional three months, to June 30, 2005 (Attachment 3).

A third amendment is now necessary to extend the contract for an additional twoweek period, to July 11, 2005 until the new vendor (Aramark) is able to provide full services. The estimated cost is $20,000.

This letter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard Anthony on July 6, 2005 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on July 7,2005.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this item is requested on July 19, 2005, to ensure food services continue at the jail facility.

FISCAL IMPACT
Estimated costs to continue the food services through July 11, 2005, are anticipated not to exceed $20,000. The Department will absorb the cost within the existing Department General Fund appropriation.
