TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on the 2010 Fifth District Summer Youth Program.

DISCUSSION
Councilwoman Schipske has engaged youth throughout the City of Long Beach to participate in community improvement projects in the Fifth Council District. These youth has been hired through the City of Long Beach Workforce Development Hire-A-Youth program, a federally funded program that provide work experience through seasonal employment for youth in the Greater Long Beach area. Last year, seven youth made landscape improvements, painted bathrooms, and refurbished park bench and tables at Heartwell, Wardlow & Pan American park.

Even though the maintaining of city alleys is the responsibility of the homeowner to the centerline of the alley, this year eight youth, between the ages of 14-18 years old, worked diligently to clean 35 alleyways in the Fifth Council District. This summer work program resulted in the removal of over 600 bags of trash; dozens of items of dumped furniture and hundreds of potholes being filled by the Public Works Department.

The 5th Council District thanks Workforce Development, the eight young people who spent their summer sprucing up our alleys and the Public Works Department for all of their hard work.
