DISCUSSION
City Council approval is being requested to enter into a contract for the purchase of eight two-wheel drive Ford Escape Hybrids. Additionally, it is requested that the City Council approve the option to purchase additional two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive units at the contracted prices, providing funds are available and additional replacements are required.

The Public Works Department, Fleet Services Bureau, has an immediate need to purchase eight two-wheel drive compact hybrids as part of the City's Fiscal Year 2006 (FY 06) vehicle replacement plan. Additional two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles are expected to be necessary for the FY 07 replacement plan. The current purchase will replace six gas-powered large utility vehicles and two CNG (compressed natural gas) sedans, ranging in age from seven to fourteen years. The budgeted replacement cycle of utility vehicles is seven years. Where feasible, the City's vehicle replacement plan provides for downsizing (reducing vehicle size), replacement with fuelefficient vehicles and reducing the fleet.

The bid was advertised on April 26, 2006, and 116 potential bidders were notified of the bid opportunity; seven are Minority-owned Business Enterprises (MBEs), five are Womenowned Business Enterprises (WBEs) , and 23 are Long Beach businesses.
