Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $4,650 offset by the Sixth Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department, to provide contributions of:
• $450 to Long Beach Camerata Singers to support an
Opening Night Gala: Save the Magic on Thursday,
September 21, 2023;
• $400 to Food Chain Workers Alliance, Inc. to support their
Black Job Fair on Saturday, September 16, 2023;
• $3,500 to Cambodia Town Inc. to support the
re-establishment of Long Beach Khmer Kickboxing;
• $300 to Long Beach Forward to support their Welcome Back
to School Celebration on Wednesday, August 30, 2023; and
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $4,650 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
Food Chain Workers Alliance, Inc. is a coalition of worker-based organizations whose members plant, harvest, process, pack, transport, prepare, serve, and sell food, organizing to improve wages and working conditions for all workers along the food chain. On September 16, 2023, in partnership with Black Agency, the organization is hosting Black Job Fair at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park (1950 Lemon Ave.). Contributions to Food Chain Workers Alliance, Inc. will go towards support of the job fair.
On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, Long Beach Forward, in partnership with AOC7 Neighborhood Association and DAYS Long Beach, hosted a Welcome Back to School event for Franklin Middle School students and parents to welcome and celebrate the first day of school. Long Beach Forward is a community-based organization dedicated to working with Long Beach residents and partners to tackle institutional issues stemming from racial and income inequity. Their mission is to create a healthy Long Beach with low-income communities of color by building community knowledge, leadership, and power.
Cambodia Town Inc. promotes Khmer culture, customs, and traditions to advance the social and economic well-being of low- and moderate-income communities. It creates a thriving and peaceful community by increasing health access, revitalizing neighborhoods, promoting local businesses, and educating youth. Contributions to Cambodia Town Inc. will go towards the re-establishment of Master Oum Ry Bahn’s Long Beach Khmer Kickboxing Center, that has been operating since 1987 and has served thousands of students. The gym will be re-established at 1038 E. Anaheim St., Long Beach., and its previous location will be converted into a shelter by the Long Beach Rescue Mission.
On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the Long Beach Camerata Singers will present an Opening Night Gala called Share the Magic, to celebrate the opening of their 58th season. The gala will take place at the Long Beach Hyatt Regency Hotel (200 S Pine Ave.) from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM and will recognize honorees Alfredo Velasco, CEO of Long Beach YMCA and Marcelle Epley, CEO of Long Beach Community Foundation and Rancho Los Cerritos.

This item is being submitted through the supplemental agenda to allow for timely processing of funds.
FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide funds to Long Beach Camerata Singers to support an Opening Night Gala: Save the Magic, Food Chain Workers Alliance, Inc. to support their Black Job Fair, Cambodia Town Inc. to support the re-establishment of Long Beach Khmer Kickboxing and to Long Beach Forward to support their Welcome Back to School Celebration. The total appropriation increase of $4,650 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by Sixth Council District One-time District Priority Funds from the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department.
